KENYA NEWSLETTER UPDATE
JUNE 5, 2008
|
|
PASTOR FRANCIS -
COMING TO DENVER
We are hoping to bring
Pastor Francis to Denver for
some leadership training and
to meet with many of you.
We are praying that he would
be able to come for the
monthes of July and August,
if he is able to get a VISA
to visit the USA and
Canada. He will also be
staffing a Marked Men For
Christ retreat,
helping with training for
our MMFC Kenya trip in
October. We are also hoping
to attend our 20 year class
reunion from Bodenseehof
Bible School from Germany.
This will be held in British
Columbia, Canada. This is
where Pastor Francis and I
first met. When Pastor
Francis is here, we would
love for as many of you as
possible to meet with him.
If you would like to help
donate towards Pastor
Francis to come in July and
August, please let me
(Randy) know.
UPDATE FROM PASTOR KEFA
We spoke with Kefa on May 3rd,
and Shangilia was buzzing with
activity. All of the High
School students had been home on
break and were preparing to
return to start their 2nd
Semester of school: May-August.
Kefa reported that the children
were all happy to be together!
Having around 22 additional
mouths to feed, though, had put
strain on their resources and
food supply. Kefa was glad to
hear that Randy was preparing to
send $2,000 that week to cover
another month of rising food
costs. More concerning, is that
food is scarce in the country!
Prayer Requests:
1. Food supply is the
biggest need and concern.
2. Internet access has been
down, although Kefa promised to
try to e-mail us with accurate
numbers on education costs to
ensure that school fees are
indeed covered for the rest of
this year.
3. Politically, there are
now 40 "Ministers", or
department leaders in the
government, so that the cost to
run the Kenyan government has
increased. Pray for wisdom for
the leaders!
4. Pray for protection and
health. There is an increased
risk for Malaria during the
current rainy season.
New Chickens Arriving!
Kefa had placed an order for 200
day-old chicks, with a cost of
$1.50/chick. There are
currently only 3-4 chickens left
in their supply, so they are
cleaning the pens to prepare for
the new batch. These new
chickens will provide eggs for
the children and staff to eat.
We will also be sending money to
cover the cost of the chickens
and feed.
UPDATE ON THE WIDOWS
Kefa reported that the area
Widows come to Shangilia every
Friday to meet together,
encourage and support each
other, exchange ideas, and have
a nice lunch together. They
were very, very happy to receive
the $400 gift that was sent and
designated specifically for
them! Some women have been
selling small things just to
survive. The tomato seedlings
are growing well at the
orphanage, and will be donated
to each of the widows when they
can be transplanted, to create
food and a potential business
opportunity for them.
UPDATE FROM PASTOR TIMOTHY
Timothy reported that prices are
doubling and many in the Kibera
Slums are really in trouble,
with very few ways to make
money. He is continually amazed
by how affected the country is
by just 3 months of fighting!
Timothy was also very grateful
to hear that we would be sending
$1,000 that week! "The money
will be used for the school and
the children. They are our
first priority!" Timothy's
desire is to increase the
teaching for the children, and
for them to understand that
their only hope is in Christ
Jesus!
Church
Timothy's church in the slums is
growing. They have started a
microfinance ministry,
encouraging small businesses so
that the people are not idle,
but are doing something with
their hands.
Prayer Requests
1. Pray for the rebuilding
of small homes.
2. Timothy is hoping for a
camera so that he can send
photos to us.
Timothy reported that his family
is well. He said that they need
encouragers and referred to
Barnabas, who was an
encourager. "I'll call you
'Barnabas', Randy!! "Please
greet the young people!!"
UPDATE FROM PASTOR FRANCIS
On May 7th, we caught up with
Francis. He reported that he,
Florence and the kids are fine.
They stayed at Shangilia for two
months, but some of them have
now moved back to Eldoret.
Their children, Krista, Eric and
Mark are choosing to stay in
Vihiga at the orphanage, as they
are too scared to return to
Eldoret at this time.
Randy spoke mainly with Francis
about his upcoming trip to the
United States, which is being
planned for July and August.
Francis is looking forward to
meeting with the Marked Men for
Christ team as they continue to
make plans for the October Kenya
Men's Conference. He will also
spend time visiting Centennial
Covenant Church, as well as some
other contacts in the States.
Prayer Requests
1. Please pray for many
Kenyan families who are now
returning to their farms, many
of which had been burned out by
their own neighbors. There are
many security and trust issues.
Thank you, dear friends, for
your continued interest,
prayers, financial gifts and
support for our efforts to
practically love and care for
these dear friends in Kenya.
You are a blessing to them, but
also to us!! We appreciate
YOU! May God encourage your
hearts, to know that you are
making a difference in so many
lives, in countless ways.

KENYA NEWSLETTER UPDATE
April 5, 2008
|
|
|
Quick update
from Randy Stensgard:
Praise God for
the generous gifts that have
been given for the ministries in
Kenya! Shangilia Orphanage
currently has 23 children from 9th
- 12th grade that
they have sent to high school
this year, for which they are
needing to cover the cost. A
few weeks ago, $4,000 was given
to help with the school fees,
and I just received word that an
additional $5,000 will be sent
to help with this same need. The
middle school students from
Centennial Covenant Church
raised $478 to help as well, so
I believe we have almost all the
money at this time for school
fees this year. Praise God!
Below you will find a list of
other financial gifts that we
were able to send two weeks ago.
-
$1,000 to
help pastor Timothy in the
Kibera slums, who feeds 400
children at the school that
he runs ($1,000 more has
been donated and will be
sent within the next week)
-
$2,000 was
sent to Shangilia Orphanage
to provide food for a month
-
$500 was sent
to Pastor Solomon to help
with food for his family
-
$200 was
sent to Pastor Philip and
Pastor Henry in Eldoret
-
$400 was
sent to Pastor Kefa and
Pastor Francis for food and
other expenses
-
$400 was
also sent to help provide
food for the widows and the
orphans they are taking care
of ($500 more has been
donated and will be sent
next week to the widows)
Thank you all for
your continual support. You all
are truly impacting 100's of
lives every day in Kenya. Wow!!
Blessings,
Randy Stensgard
GOOD FRIDAY IN KENYA
It was the
morning of Good Friday when we
last caught up with our Kenyan
friends! Pastor Kefa and Pastor
Francis were busy preparing for
a 3-day conference that they
were hosting at the Quaker
Church next door to Shangilia
Orphanage. Nearly 300 people
were expected for this past
weekend and they felt that it
would be good practice for the
Men's Conference in October! We
spoke directly to Kefa and to
Solomon, who was also there,
helping to make preparations for
the event.
News from Kefa

Kefa seemed to be approaching
the weekend with much
anticipation of three full days
to bring people together in
worship of their God! Many of
the highschoolers had been home
visiting and the children are
all very happy, he said! "God
is bigger than our problems!!"
Prayer Requests
1.
There are changes being
made to the Kenya Constitution.
Kibaki is President, Odinga is
Prime Minister and there are 2
Deputy Prime Ministers. The
people are still waiting to see
change.
2.
There are still displaced
people. People have lost
property and homes and are
scared to return home!
3.
The conflict in Kenya
interrupted the time for
planting of farms. Therefore,
there is even more concern for
the availability of food this
coming year.
4.
Pray for more
reconciliation!!
News from Solomon

Solomon reported that transportation
to the Kisumu area is still very
difficult from his hometown of
Nakuru, but he had brought 10 people
with him to the Easter Conference
from his home church. He was
anticipating great things! Solomon
also reported that they feel more
safe in Nakuru. "The curfew has
been lifted and we can enjoy our
freedom!" he said.
Prayer Requests
1.
Prayer for the nation of
Kenya
2.
Pray the people will not live
in resentment!
3.
Pray for peaceful transition!
4.
Pray that hearts were changed at the
Conference!
Update from Pastor Timothy
Timothy was so pleased to report
that shoes had been donated for all
of the children at his school in the
Kibera Slums, and the children were
so excited!! They are all so
thankful for the food and books that
have been purchased through the
donations we have sent! "I know
that we have friends," he said.
"You are the only ones caring for
us! The children are so happy!!"
"In heaven someday we will all be
sitting at the table together and we
will be walking and talking
together!" What a day that will be.
Below find Timothy's most recent
e-mail to Randy:
Dear Friend,
Thanks once again for your loving
kindness to Me and Kibera people
especially children. You did great
to send money to us for food. It was
going to be hard on us. You saved
us. May our good God bless you with
good health for His work. We live to
tell it out.
Things here in Kenya are shaping up
but people in Kibera are hungry.
There are no jobs in this slum.
People live from hand to mouth. This
is to say when they get, is when
they eat.
In this ministry, we deal with the
poor children of the poorest. Our
church has poor members. We have
started a sub ministry by the name
Calvary Growing Seed. This is for
men and women in our church. Here we
do small scale micro-finance. Some
are sewing baskets, some are selling
sukuma wiki, some are sewing clothes
and sweaters and others make
cereals. We are encouraging them to
do something that can earn them a
living.
We are praying for the helpers here
at the school, ie. teachers, cooks,
cleaners, guards, manager to get a
support. They do not have any. Pray
for us about this.
Randy, you are my great friend.
Greet for me your family and all
those other good friends that you
came with last. May God bless you as
you serve Him.
In His Name,
Pastor Timothy Mulehi. |

Kenya is at peace
and they celebrate the
new year!
Kenya finally came to a
peacefull solution to
the presidential
election situation and
since then Kenyans have
been celebrating the new
year (since the riots
all started to happen at
the end of December).
Pastor Francis said
"it's as if Kenya is
reborn, peace if finally
hear and we can finally
celebrate the new year".
Pastor Francis
wants to thank everyone
for the continual
prayers for Kenya, they
were answered. Kenya
is now rebuilding and
people are pulling their
lives back together.
Thank you for your past,
present and future
support!!
Greetings from
Pastor Kefa!
Kefa and Lonika
send their greetings and
gratitude for our partnership
and prayers for Shangilia.
Kefa's largest prayer request on
Wednesday night was that God's
Spirit would break the hearts of
their leaders so that a peace
agreement could be made.
Thursday morning that agreement
came, and we now partner in
prayer for patience for the
Kenyan people as details of the
new leadership are worked out,
and that peace would be restored
as the long rebuilding process
begins. Praise God and trust in
His power and will for the
Kenyan nation!
FOOD &
ORPHANS
I asked Kefa
about the process of getting the
food they need. He stated that
he and Francis travel to Eldoret
weekly, and find most of what
they need at small markets
there. As for the food supply
on Shangilia's campus, they have
eaten all of the ripe bananas
and are awaiting more to ripen.
The chickens for eating are
almost gone, but they hope to
soon purchase 200 chickens for
eggs. They will start a business
and share with the community.
They are still enjoying some
things from the garden. There
are currently 42 orphans after
many have left for high-school.
3 new displaced children were
brought to them recently who do
not speak Kiswahili, English or
the same tribal language. This
is a big adventure for them!
More children from other tribes
will be accepted as they want
this to be a true "Kenyan"
orphanage.
HIGH
SCHOOLERS
11 new high-schoolers
have started classes!! With the
cost being $750 per child for
the first year, the total is
$8,250. Global Education Fund
out of Boulder has sent enough
money to cover the first half of
the year. Our job is to raise
$4,125 to cover the second half
of this year. In addition,
there are 10 other students who
are in their 2nd or 3rd
years of high-school, so at $500
per child, their total cost is
$5,000 for the year.
April Stensgard, Jody Jenney and
I (Deb Rodda) will be meeting
this next week to brainstorm
ideas for fundraising efforts to
meet this very important need.
Of course, we are also
continuing to focus on raising
money to send for food and basic
needs, but the education piece
is also very vital, as Kefa and
Francis have said many times,
"Education is the Key to
overcoming our enemy of
poverty!"
Please contact one of us if you
have ideas or would like to join
our efforts! May we move
forward in our quest to bring
hope and healing to these dear
sisters and brothers in Christ!

LETTER
FROM PASTOR TIMOTHY
Timothy so
desires for us to understand the
importance, and his immense
appreciation for our partnership
with him in the Kibera slums of
Nairobi! "You are the only ones
sending money! We are so
grateful! 400 children are
receiving their only meal of the
day at school and are grateful!
The Lord is really working
through you!!!"
See his letter
below:
Dear Randy,
It was great to hear you talk
to me this morning. You remain
to be my friend forever. Your
love to the people of Kibera is
something that the Lord has put
in to your heart. May His Name
be praised, Amen.
I am thanking our good God who
has enabled you to come to our
aid at this very tempting time
of our country Kenya. People
have died, others are displaced
and many cannot get enough
food. Here in Kibera people are
hungry especially children.
Children do not understand why
all this is happening. Many are
traumatized after running here
and there as fighting went on.
Those who ran to a near by park
are now coming back.
Things here are not yet good. We
are praying that the talks that
are going on will bear fruits.
Kenya has 42 tribes. These
tribes settle in different parts
of Kenya. Boundaries are marked
for each tribe. People here do
not speak the same language. A
Common language that most people
use in most of Kenyan towns is
Kiswahili. English is for those
who have gone to school. Kibera
being an informal settlement,
many people live here. Some have
been born here. Others come to
the city to look for jobs and
since jobs are nowhere to be
found they settled here. Kibera
Slum is anticipated to have over
a million people. Each Kenyan
tribe is represented. I f you
reach Kibera with the Gospel of
our Lord Jesus Christ, it is
that you are reaching the whole
Kenya plus its neighboring
countries. People from Sudan,
Uganda, Somali, Congo, Tanzania,
Ethiopia etc also live here in
Kibera Slum.
All evils are here. This place
is ripe for Jesus. This is where
the Lord has called me and you
to work. Satan is very hard on
people here. He wants them to
die in sin to go to hell. Pray
that what is happening here may
be used of God to bring men and
women to Himself.
The school is doing well.
Children that had been displaced
as a result of war are coming
back from where they had gone.
They have had a lot of trouble.
I have eleven teachers, two
cooks, two cleaners, one
watchman and a manager. All are
members of our church. They are
volunteering. They do not have
any support. This church is a
slum church. It cannot support
even a pastor. Pray that God's
faithfulness may a bound.
Thank you very much for the
money you are sending to us. The
children are eating. They praise
God for you that you're caring
for them. This will be
remembered forever. You remember
the woman who gave two pennies.
She is recorded in the Bible.
You too are in the record book
of God. I am looking for a good
camera to take some photos for
you.
Today you send me $200 which is
Kshs.13,517.75. I have the money
with me now. 0n 5th February
2008, I went to the bank and got
Kshs. 33,794.38. I have food in
my house and also in the school.
We are all happy for your help
to us. We are praying for you,
your family and your friends.
May God give you good health for
His work. We love you all.
Philippians 1:6.
Blessings,
Pastor Timothy Mulehi.

MARKED MEN FOR CHRIST
KENYA - Oct. 9-22, 2008
For those of you that were
wondering about our Marked Men
For Christ Conference that was
going to happen January 17-30,
2008. It has been
post-poned till October 9 -22,
2008
Thank you for your prayers for
this "Life-Changing" ministry
that we hope to still bring to
Kenya.
Isaiah
55:8 "For my thoughts are
not your thoughts, neither are
your ways my ways," declares the
Lord. "As the heavens are
higher than the earth, so are my
ways higher than your ways and
my thoughts than your thoughts."
More updates on this will come
later.

Dear friends of Kenya,
here is
our 2nd official Kenya update
from Debbie Rodda and Randy
Stensgard. We are still in
constant contact with all of our
friends in Kenya and continue to
pray for them.
We
want to thank all of you for
your partnership, prayers and
financial help for the
ministries in Kenya.
Without you, our friends in
Kenya would not have the help
they need.
Pastor Francis and Pastor Kefa
from Shangilia Orphanage thank
God for you each and every day!
They are asking God to bless you
with His love daily because of
your love and concern for Kenya.
We also want to thank the
company of
Interscapes
(from Minnesota) with 58
employees as a new partner that
is starting to come along side
Shangilia Orphanage. Thank you
for your partnership.
Another cool thing is
that Eldorado
Elementary School (Highlands
Ranch, Colorado) has helped the
Reiner kids (Taylor, Luke and
Brady) to raise a total of about
$934. They were able to do this
through cookie sales at lunch
and collecting "change for
change" for food at the
Orphanage. Copper Mesa
Elementary School (Highlands
Ranch, Colorado) is also helping
collect "Quarters for Kenya" to
be able to provide food for the
orphanage. Thank you all!
So here is the update from
Francis in Kenya:
COALITION GOVERNMENT?
While Kofi Anon has been in Kenya
for the past 3 weeks, the situation
has been stabilizing within the
cities, although many people are
still displaced. Anon and other
world leaders are still urging for a
coalition government as the only
solution, but the question is,
"Where will the power be shared?"
President Kibaki and his cabinet
want to rule with an iron fist and
are refusing to give up control of
anything. Francis states that the
Kenyan President and his Parliament
are the highest paid in the world.
Prayer point:
Pray that Kenyan leaders will be
able to see Kenya, and not just
themselves, and that Kibaki will be
persuaded to share some of the
power, as this is what the people
want!
ELDORET (Where Francis
lives)
The numbers at King's Highway Church
(Pastor Francis's church) are slowly
building, although there is need for
deep healing. Bitterness between
tribes is causing great fear and
mistrust. Even the Fellowship of
area Pastors is having trouble
trusting each other. Francis and
others are leading a study in
Philippians encouraging all to see
the joy of the Lord through this
trial. Also, only a small number of
children are attending school at
King's Highway school because of the
fear that still exists.
Prayer point:
Pray for healing through the power
of God's intervention!
SHANGILIA ORPHANAGE
(near Kisumu)
The orphan kids are back to school
full-time and the high-school
children settled in their new
schools. Francis and Kefa are
extremely grateful for the funds to
help with food costs as the economy
continues to fall with fuel and food
prices rising everyday! A great
challenge is the cost of animal
feed. Kefa would love to learn how
to make their own feed, which could
become a small micro-business down
the road. They have also started
growing tomato seedlings to
eventually give to the area widows
as a business starter.
Prayer point:
Francis and Kefa meet weekly
with the widows and townspeople who
are in great need and pray for
wisdom and resources to reach out to
the community!
Other updates
and Needs:
-
11 students
from Shangilia Orphanage
were sent to high school.
But as of
right now they do not have
enough money for all
students to go to school.
Another Partner, Global
Education Fund is doing
matching funds to help pay
for the children to go to
high school. Each child
that goes to high school
needs to pay about $750. for
the first year and then
about $500. for the second,
third and forth year.
Things
are getting much safer in Kenya each
and every day. It seems like things
are getting back to normal again in
the big cities like Kisumu, Eldoret,
and Nairobi.
-
$300. sent to Pastor
Henry and Pastor Phillip to get
food for their families and
friends.
-
$400 was sent to help 22
elderly widows that care for
orphans also.
-
"Hopes
and Dreams". The orphanage
would like to buy the property
next to the orphanage to build
more housing for orphanage.
Right now there are about 50
children at the orphanage. In
the community there are over
5,000 orphan children that have
no place to go. Shangilia
Orphanage would like to expand
their property and facility to
bring in more children and even
orphan babies. One orphanage
baby that they took in a few
month ago, they named Hillary
Clinton (a little boy), they
changed the name to Larry (a
little more appropriate name for
a boy). If you would like to
help with this project please
let us know.
There are many needs,
but the greatest need is your prayer
support. Thank you for your
partnership.
